The marriage debate
Lisa Giancola, KSBY Ch. 6 Santa Maria
February 11, 2006

Marriage activists touring California stopped in Santa Maria today to protect their message as Valentine's Day draws near.

"What's marriage all about? It's about brides and grooms," said Randy Thomasson, Campaign for Children and Families President. "It's about men and women who know marriage is obviously about men and women. You need a man and a woman to have a baby. You need a man and a woman to have a marriage."

CCF is calling for a constitutional amendment to prevent gay marriages. But gays and lesbians we talked with say marriage is the only government instrument that protects their families. They want equal rights, including equal taxes.

"I have family too. They claim this is a family event?" said Ethel Landers, gay marriage supporter. "I have children and grandchildren. I want rights to protect them, especially the inheritance I leave them. I don't want it to be overtaxed. I want to protect my family, my home and my partner."

CCF is on an 11 city tour across California. It is working to counter homosexual activists who plan to protest county government offices on Valentine's Day as they demand marriage licenses.
