San Diego - Anti-same-sex marriage activists stopped in San Diego Monday as part of an 11-city statewide tour to promote their assertion that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.
Speaking at an event outside the San Diego County Administration Center, officials with the Campaign for Children and Families urged support of a proposed anti-gay marriage amendment to the state constitution.
"The bad news is that the California Supreme Court and the California state Legislature are preparing to invent homosexual marriages and impose them on every community," said campaign President Randy Thomasson.
"The good news is the VoteYesMarriage.com amendment will override the judges and politicians," Thomasson said. "It will permanently protect marriage rights for one man and one woman in the California Constitution."
Proposition 22, approved by voters in 2000, declares that only a marriage between a man and a woman is recognized in California. However, because Proposition 22 was only a statute and not a constitutional amendment, same-sex marriage opponents fear it could be overturned.
Supporters of gay marriage argue same-sex couples should be extended the same rights afforded heterosexual couples.
The San Diego Democratic Club plans a Valentine's Day rally at the County Administration Center Tuesday in support of same-sex marriages.
