Randy Thomasson, director de la organización Savecalifornia.com, un grupo estatal conservador pro familia llamó a Marcotte un bufón que ha lanzado la iniciativa sólo para burlarse del matrimonio entre un hombre y una mujer. "La Biblia permite el divorcio en casos de adulterio y abandono físico, incluso la separación temporal con fines de reconciliación futura", anotó. Thomasson acusó incluso a Marcotte de tener el apoyo de la comunidad gay. "Está recolectando firmas fuera de los bares gay y hasta ha dicho que va a sacar camisetas con el slogan de su campaña para venderlas", indicó.

Tom Ammiano: Gay assemblyman jokes to push a serious agenda

Critics say Ammiano's support for statewide legislation to legalize marijuana, to permit same-sex marriage and to honor Milk are an attempt to push California too far left. "It destroys the fabric of society," said Ken Mettler, president of the California Republican Assembly, a nonprofit political group. "He's the worst kind of politician because it's all about him – his sexual anarchy and his anti-God agenda," said Randy Thomasson of SaveCalifornia.com. Ammiano said he is used to people taking "cheap shots" at his politics. "Definitely left of center," he said of his leanings. "I'm definitely what people used to call a liberal, but now it's become a bad word."

Valley swing votes lobbied for health-care bill

From the other side, conservative family and Christian organizations are among the groups that have mobilized in opposition to the bill. One such group is SaveCalifornia.com. “We’re active on this monstrosity that is sitting in the wings in the Senate side. We will continue to be active,” said SaveCalifornia.com President Randy Thomasson. That will include lobbying of both Costa and Cardoza, who Thomasson said will be facing re-election battles next year that become much tougher if they continue to support the bill.
