Defeat of tax-hike scheme a big victory for California families

Thomasson: "Hard-working families raising their children or grandchildren can breathe a sigh of relief"

Sacramento, California – Longtime pro-family leader Randy Thomasson says California families are the winners in the battle over more taxes on Californians’ purchases, income, and cars, and a sharp reduction of the child tax credit.

Today, Democrat Governor Jerry Brown, and the three Republican state senators who had been pushing hardest for other financial reforms in exchange for a multi-year tax hike, said the talks were over and the tax-hike scheme, requiring a two-thirds vote of the Legislature, will not be on this summer's ballot.

“Hard-working families raising their children or grandchildren can breathe a sigh of relief that two years of oppressive tax hikes on purchases and car registration will expire on July 1,” said Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com , which, since early January, has been helping concerned Californians to demand that Republican state legislators defeat the tax-hike scheme

“California families are the winners here because our bloated government will be cut down to size instead of taking more money from fathers’ wallets and mothers’ purses," Thomasson explained. "However, our elected leaders should eliminate tens of billions of dollars annually in systemic waste, fraud, duplication, and inefficiency, instead of coddling wealthy government unions and slashing basic government functions.”

Governor Brown and Democrat state legislators had sought to continue to the historic tax hikes of 2009 on purchases (increasing the sales tax by 1.00%), income (up 0.25%), and car registration (from 0.65% to 1.15%). They were also seeking to continue dramatically reducing the child tax credit from $309 to $99 per child.

According to the Tax Foundation, California’s state and local tax burden of 11.8% of income is well above the national average of 9.8%; California’s sales tax is highest in the nation; California’s top individual income tax rate is third-highest in the nation; California’s business tax climate ranks 49th in the nation; and California’s corporate income tax rate is the highest among Western states.
