Permission to be angry at 55 Democrats and 18 Republicans

Friday, August 19, 2022, 12:30 pm | Randy Thomasson

On August 18, 2022, the Democrat-controlled California State Assembly passed SB 1479 to force every K-12 government school (including charter schools) to have a “Covid testing plan” (for the purpose of testing, tracking, and quarantining children, shoving aside parents’ rights and wishes).

Final passage of SB 1479 in the State Senate is expected by August 31.

What can you do?

  • Urge Governor Newsom to veto SB 1479
  • Rebuke assemblymembers who voted for, or refused to speak against, SB 1479

1. Demand a veto

Believe it or not, you should actually urge a veto of SB 1479 based on Governor Newsom’s Department of Finance signficant opposition to the bill, citing its shabby financing and redundancy with current Covid policies. See DOF’s August 2 letter opposing SB 1479

Newsom’s daytime, weekday constituent services number is 916-445-2841 and here’s his web form. When you send your comment opposing SB 1479, make sure you select “Con,” meaning “oppose.”

2. Rebuke the silent Republicans

SB 1479 initially only passed by 3 votes (41 votes are needed to pass bills). So this anti-parent, medical-tyranny bill passed with only 43 yes votes, while 16 Republicans silently voted no and 3 Republicans abstained. Later that day, 12 Democrats “went with the flow” and added their yes votes.

Realize minority Republicans (only 19 out of 80 assemblymembers) don’t have the votes to win, so their voices are worth more than their votes. Thus, you can reasonably conclude a non-fighting, silent Republican is a useless Republican.

Kudos to Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, the sole speaker against SB 1749 on the Assembly floor. Showing it’s not too hard to stand and speak, Kiley raised his microphone and said: “It’s time for our schools to be educational institutions rather than arms of the public health bureaucracy. This state has had the most onerous school shutdowns and mandates and testing regime of any state in the country, and we have done inestimable harm to our students as a result. No other state has taken the approach that we have. Parents and families are fed up with it. This week, for the first day of school in Los Angeles Unified, 50 thousand kids were absent. Enough is enough and I urge a no vote.”

But where were the other Republican voices? Because if even 3 more Republicans had risen to speak — about the August 11 new CDC “guidelines” recommending against screening those without symptoms, about the fact that parental consent is missing from SB 1479, and about the current California “Covid” data proving there’s no epidemic — this would have informed and pulled away or scared off several more Democrats, enough to deny this bill the minimum 41 votes to pass. Truly, a missed opportunity.

Tell these 18 silent Republicans, “Your refusal to speak up for parental rights and against medical tyranny is wrong. I’m angry with your cowardice not to speak against SB 1479.”

Because assemblymembers tend to “trash” messages from non-constituents, please call anonymously afterhours and all weekend. Yet with your own assemblymember, identify yourself for maximum impact.

3. Protest the anti-parent Democrats

Tell the 55 Democrats who voted yes on SB 1479: “I’m angry that you voted for SB 1479, which parents don’t want and children don’t need. Stop oppressing us and stop trampling parental rights!”
