Mormon or not, you can’t mix “LGBT rights” and religious freedom

mormonlgbtnewsconference

60-second podcast: “Who’s moving the perverse ‘LGBT’ agenda forward?

Our office has gotten a lot of emails — mostly from Mormons — upset about our opposition to the Mormon hierarchy’s new mix of “LGBT rights” and religious freedom.

But I ask you, what if a Protestant Christian church said the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transsexual agenda should be the law? That business owners and property owners who oppose these unnatural perversities must abandon their values?

You would be appalled and would oppose this, wouldn’t you?

And what if a Catholic church said that homosexual-bisexual-transsexual values must be in the law so that everyone who doesn’t agree is criminal if they stand up for their moral values?

You would speak out against this today!

Now what if any religion, any church, any seemingly-moral entity — even the one to which you “belonged” — decided to support the “LGBT” political agenda but dressed it up in a “religious freedom” package? You should immediately be suspicious of what they’re saying. Because when religious freedom is “mixed” with perversity-affirming laws, religious freedom is either several curtailed or eliminated.

Consider if there were no laws requiring acceptance of homosexuality, bisexuality, and cross-dressing/”sex changes.” 100% of business and property owners would have freedom of conscience on these matters.

But if there were a “non-discrimination law” forcing acceptance of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality upon business and property owners, everyone loses their moral right to object.

Now, assume that joined with the “LGBT” law is a well-crafted, super-strong religious exemption allowing adherents of organized religion to be exempt. Perhaps this would protect as many as 20% or 30% — but only the religious folks. But don’t bet on it — liberal politicians and liberal judges are committed to their goal of stuffing religious freedom into the confining walls of a church building.

It’s a fact that religious-freedom exemptions aren’t working to protect people of faith from the tyrannical “LGBT” agenda. All over the country, there’s religious freedom in every state constitution and even religious exemptions in some of the laws promoting the homosexual-bisexual-transsexual agenda. But those laws aren’t protecting bakers, florists, photographers, and marriage chapel owners who disagree with homosexual “marriage,” are they?

I have Mormon friends and vendors, and love them all. And despite my detractors’ claims, I’ve read the “religious freedom + lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender rights” statement of the Mormon Church hierarchy. Sadly, it’s ignorant at best and deceptive at worst.

Hopefully you already know that advancing the unnatural, unhealthy, unbiblical, and tyrannical homosexual-bisexual-transsexual agenda is a huge problem in our culture and goes against the Bible too.

Confirming their unprincipled act is the Mormon leaders’ own admission that they “compromised” with homosexual activists – see the last paragraph, which reads (my highlights in bold):

The Church’s approach represents a desire to bring people together to encourage mutually respectful dialogue. Sister Marriott stressed, “We are at our best as fellow citizens when the push-pull of different viewpoints, freely and thoroughly aired in national debate, leads ultimately to compromise and resolution and we move on as a nation, stronger than before.”

What changed at the Mormon Church’s Jan. 27 news conference, which simultaneously called for both religious freedom and laws that permit homosexuals, bisexuals, and transsexuals to dominate others? The Mormon Church has supported religious freedom for years — it’s historically been in their self-interest. What’s new and being pushed forward is the Mormon Church’s championing of the “lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender” agenda.

Mormon Church spokesman Dallin Oaks said it (my highlights in bold):

Today, state legislatures across the nation are being asked to strengthen laws related to LGBT issues in the interest of ensuring fair access to housing and employment. The leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is on record as favoring such measures.

We call on local, state and the federal government to serve all of their people by passing legislation that protects vital religious freedoms for individuals, families, churches and other faith groups while also protecting the rights of our LGBT citizens in such areas as housing, employment and public accommodation in hotels, restaurants and transportation—protections which are not available in many parts of the country.

Do you see what’s happened? The homosexual activists groups have been lobbying the Mormon Church for several years, and the Mormon hierarchy has given in. In fact, they caved in 2009 when they first supported homosexual-bisexual-transsexual laws in Salt Lake City. And then, in 2013, Mormon leaders supported openly homosexual Boy Scouts in scout troops and on camping trips.

Stop and think. Whenever you advance the cause of evil, even a little bit, evil is winning. So if someone says, “local, state, and federal governments should all pass laws forcing homosexual-bisexual-transsexual values on every business owner and every property owner, except for the religious folks” – watch out!

Because when religious freedom clashes in court with immoral laws, religious freedom has either been very narrowly defined or ignored. So when the Mormon Church tries to mix the “LGBT” agenda with religious freedom, you know what’s going to win and what’s going to lose. What the Mormon Church has done is antithetical to a biblical church, especially when Mormon leaders themselves admit they’ve “compromised” with homosexual activists.

TAKE ACTION: Please call the Mormon headquarters in Salt Lake City at 801-240-1000. Tell them you want to leave a message for church leaders: “Homosexual and transsexual behavior are unbiblical. Please repent of your promotion of these immoral and harmful behaviors.” And when the receptionist says, “The news conference was about upholding religious freedom,” just tell them, “Don’t give that canned answer. The Mormon church has always stood for religious freedom. What’s new is that you’re now in favor of forcing homosexual-bisexual-transsexual agenda laws upon the majority of the public, which is a terrible role model for children.”

And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves
before men,
but God knows your hearts. For what is highly
esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.”
Jesus Christ in Luke 16:15

California election lessons

Was the election emotional for you too?

I live on hope. So every election I try for the best, work hard, imagine victory, celebrate when “we win,” and mope around when “we lose.” But I’m looking forward to talking with you about the election that was, so that you and I can learn important lessons from it.

As I near 50 years of age, I am taking more stock of life, of what God desires for people, and what people desire for themselves. And it’s become clear to me that people do what they know, and don’t do what they don’t know. And it’s a fact that people trust people they know, and don’t trust people they don’t know. So what you know and who you know is key to your behavior.

So, from the ashes of the election, I challenge you to renew your hunger for knowledge. Because the power of knowledge, mixed with Godly inspiration and humility, is a fruitful force!

What we can learn from the just-concluded California election?

1. The “Republican wave” did not reach California. While Republicans took the U.S. Senate and increased their U.S. House membership and governors, this so-called “Republican wave” was stopped cold in California. No excitement (nor moral values) at the top of the statewide ticket and no big ballot measures meant that average voters weren’t motivated, and many didn’t vote. However, because California has the largest and most powerful unions of any state, the Democrat-union machine worked hardest and “held” all their statewide offices. The biggest get-out-the-vote factor for conservatives and Republicans was actually not any motivator, but math. With general voter disenchantment in California and a record low turnout of registered voters this year, those right-thinking and right-leaning voters who cast their ballots actually had more influence at the polls. If only more pro-family people cared to vote! But keep reading, because you and I can and should inspire more people to care.

2. The Democrat-union machine is a force to be reckoned with. The Bible tells believers “your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Likewise, the ruling Democrat politicians and their liberal allies, fueled by union money and taxpayer funds, will gobble up, take, and hold territory — unless a stronger force rises up.

What do you get with Democrats in power? Look at their record: Abortion expansion; perversity enforcement at the expense of religious freedom, free speech, and parental rights; coercion of taxpayer dollars and employee dollars; replacing public service with a “revenue” motive; punishing hard work and profit; encouraging crime by lowering penalties; wasting God-given natural resources; increasing debt; restricting consumer freedoms; ignoring the written Constitution; corrupting justice in the courts; and ruining children but calling it “freedom.”

Yes, this election saw California Republicans win back a few seats in the Legislature, enough to deny Democrats a two-thirds supermajority with which to raise taxes without voter approval. But if this was the best Republicans could do in a low turnout election (which tends to favor conservatives), you can expect the Democrat-union machine to mount a formidable challenge to retake those seats in future elections. So expect a continual fight. This “fight mentality” is easier to accept this when you realize that life is a battle and you must choose sides. For when we expect peace, we tend to err. A proper expectation that life involves conflict and faith involves risk promotes personal responsibility, sacrificial love, productivity and a proper defense. As it’s been aptly said, “Freedom is not free.”

3. Light dispels darkness. Given that the average person is discouraged by government and doesn’t vote, this is an opportunity for numerical minorities to win victories. If you feel small or ineffective or perhaps even like a loser, consider the minority groups of the Sadducees in the Gospels or homosexual activists today – both small in number but mighty in power. If you feel small, think big and how to grow your impact. The fact that light dispels darkness is a truism both physically and spiritually. We just need more light! So put on love and reject fear and shine the light all you can.

The Church is the problem and the solution. It used to be that the Church founded by Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, was the solution. Christianity was first persecuted by Rome, but then eventually took over Rome because Christians displayed God’s purpose, justice, love, and hope to the world.

Fast forward to the 1700’s, which several church historians view as the high point of Christian influence in Western Civilization. Christians founded universities, hospitals, schools, charities, companies – and good government, giving Americans a magnificent inheritance.

Now fast forward to after the Civil War, when Christian influence was waning. That’s when a minister of the Gospel, Rev. James A. Garfield, who later became the 20th U.S. president, prophetically said:

Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature. . . . [I]f the next centennial does not find us a great nation . . . it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.

Again, look at history. There have been up to four “Great Awakenings” in America, which were periods of Christian revival, faith in action, and holy reform: Historians mark them as First (c. 1731–1755), Second (c. 1790–1840), Third (c. 1850–1900), and Fourth (c. 1960–1980).

Do you agree with me that it’s time for another “Great Awakening” — where people of faith recognize that faith doesn’t mean non-action, but action; that the standard of truth for real Christians is the word of God, not feelings; that God’s word, not ourselves, defines morality; that fear of God must replace fear of man; that courage must overcome cowardice; and that love for others must extinguish selfishness?

Indeed, there is an urgent need for radical reformation of the Church. For how can we have moral government unless the majority of voters are moral? And how we can have good government unless the majority of voters know the difference between right and wrong?

Listen to what a friend of mine posted on our Facebook the day after the election:

I visited individually each and every church in my area in 1990. It took two of us together one year. Out of 222 “churches” only 70 were actually “pro-life” or other family, Biblical thinkers or values! These are the churches I have remained in contact with. In 1990, they would be open to either a speaker and informative meeting or printed voters guidelines etc. Today it is almost unbelievable and unbearable to deal with them and any election day issues!

Do you grasp what this means? This unique poll of churches in Modesto, California means perhaps today’s “Bible-based” churches should stop calling themselves Jesus Christ’s CHURCH because they are hiding His light instead of reflecting and shining it powerfully in every area of life and our land.

In Matthew 5:13-16, the Savior of the world told His followers, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

So what’s the solution?

Obviously, for government to be good, the main influence on the government must be people who know what good is and does. Therefore, individuals, pastors, congregations can and should repent, and commit to God that they will stop fearing man and going with their feelings, and begin learning to fear God and love people. On a large scale, this would be a 5th “Great Awakening” in our culture, the heart of morality and the source of winning back good government. How welcome this would be! Knowing God and living out His goodness in our lives and our culture? It’s the ultimate Who and What!

Why the election turned out like it did

Did enough moral conservatives turn out in the June 3 California primary election?

On the one hand, there were just enough conservatives to propel statewide Republican candidates to the first or second slot in every statewide race, except in the nonpartisan state schools chief race.

On the other hand, with only 18.3% voter turnout statewide, it’s evident that a lot of otherwise right-thinking conservatives stayed home. If they had voted and voted wisely, the deceptive Prop. 41 would have been defeated and strongly conservative candidates would have won, not lost, their primary elections.

Why did conservatives not vote in droves? It’s frustrating, because when there are no big campaign issues (Jerry Brown and the Democrat-controlled California Legislature have banned all voter-initiated ballot measures from primary elections), I still expect moral conservatives to care much more about God’s values and about what’s best for children than liberal voters.

But the last few years have taken their toll on the psyche of California conservatives. The overturning of Proposition 22 and Proposition 8 on marriage licenses, the failure of moral referendums to achieve the ballot, the power of the pro-Democrat union machine, and the 2012 elections giving Democrats 2/3rds control of the California Legislature — all have had a depressing effect.

So today, in California, the average conservative thinks like a loser, because so much has been lost. But this mindset, while understandable, is not a mature, wise, and principled perspective, but is more akin to the mindset of a frightened child or a defeated animal.

Deep down, what’s really been lost is critical thinking and the commitment to love God and love people no matter what. This is the perspective that rises above the dust and ashes and sees the truth about God, the truth about me, and the truth about evil. It’s a responsible understanding of life that goes forward in faith, hope, and love, rather than cowering in fear, self-centeredness, and despair.

Consider that if critical thinking were popular among California’s conservative voters, they would realize that, in candidate-oriented contests, their votes indeed matter and that more good votes from others will do even more good.

And what if most conservatives had not just thought about avoiding personal pain of disappointment (a main motivation for not voting), but they had done the math? For, in low turnout elections like this one, a person’s vote carries more weight mathematically. For people who want to make a difference, this election indeed was their opportunity.

Why was this critical thinking not done by conservatives this election? I believe it’s because of the emotional grip of fear. If I’m scared and depressed, it’s easy to focus only on my painful emotions and my misshapen identity. And if I don’t think of what God wants (or perhaps I confusedly think God is the cause of evil government, which is not at all biblical and is completely antithetical to God’s holy character), then I will never break through my depression, or step into the light, or gain perspective on what’s really going on or how I should really be thinking.

For every person who calls themselves “moral” has a moral code that springs from the God of the Bible, whether they know it or not. And that moral code is basically this: to do what’s right in God’s sight, and to avoid and even oppose what’s wrong.

Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, explained God’s greatest commandments in the New Testament: “‘And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)

Jesus’ Love Commandment is directly applied to our modern-day voting like this:

“Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual — or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country.”
U.S. Founding Father Samuel Adams (1722-1803)

“The Church must take the right ground in regard to politics. The time has come that Christians must vote for honest men and take consistent ground in politics … God cannot sustain this free and blessed country which we love and pray for unless the Church will take right ground. Politics are a part of religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to the country as part of their duty to God … God will bless or curse this nation according to the course Christians take in politics.” Charles Finney, leading U.S. evangelist (1792-1875)

“Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature … If the next centennial does not find us a great nation…it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.” James Garfield, 20th U.S. President (1831-1881)

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer, German pastor and patriot under Nazism (1906-1945)

Ultimately, if we love God and love people, we will vote and vote wisely, and do even more than that. But if we don’t vote or we vote carelessly, our love is weak. Because love is a definable word, choice, and action, the election lesson is clear: most Californians don’t truly love God or truly love people.

Love is needed so much, in order to fight the good fight and pay the price of freedom in our land. Will you rise up and get uncomfortable for the sake of liberty? Otherwise, you’re sentencing your children and grandchildren to even more uncomfortable futures.
