No tax hike yet, and no systemic waste cut either

Thursday, March 17, 2011, 7:17 pm |

It’s been two straight days of voting in both houses of the California Legislature.

The good news is no tax hike has been approved or even come up for a vote, because no Republican legislator, so far, will agree to it.

The bad news is Democrats are NOT slashing systemic waste, but are cutting back government services. In other words, people get the shaft, but bureaucrats, union bosses, the bloated UC system stay fat and lazy. See all the structural waste that should be cut instead.

The most contentious item on the Senate and Assembly floors today was Jerry Brown’s proposal to redirect “lower-risk offenders” from state prisons to local jails and shift parole functions to local governments. Part of the bill allows county sheriffs to decide whether to incarcerate or release, depending on whether the jails were too full. This motivated some Republicans to alert families to get a gun to defend themselves against more criminals roaming free.

Keep urging Republican legislators to hold the line against placing more taxes on the ballot (more taxes on purchases, income, and cars, as well as a sharp reduction in child tax credit).   The Republicans have the power to withhold Republican votes, and that would deny Democrat legislators a 2/3rds majority to achieve their taxing goal.

When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers, let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers, ‘just men who will rule in the fear of God.’ The preservation of [our] government depends on the faithful discharge of this Duty; if the citizens neglect their Duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted; laws will be made, not for the public good so much as for selfish or local purposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute the Laws; the public revenues will be squandered on unworthy men; and the rights of the citizen will be violated or disregarded. If [our] government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the Divine Commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the Laws.
U.S. founding father Noah Webster, author of the first American dictionary (1758 – 1843)

Today is the day of the big tax-hike vote

Wednesday, March 16, 2011, 9:28 am |

Today is the day when California state legislators have scheduled a vote on continuing a heavy tax burden on you and your family. Even if you’ve already called, I’m asking you to call, fax, or email again so that your opposition rings in legislators’ ears as they prepare to vote. Your immediate action is needed.

What’s at stake? Jerry Brown and the Democrats want 5 more years of the sales tax hike, income tax hike, car tax hike, and the $210 reduction in the child tax credit. (These 2009 tax hikes were the largest of any state in U.S. history.)

This morning, SaveCalifornia.com delivered our letter strongly opposing placing taxes on the ballot to Republican legislators. If GOP assemblymembers and senators hold out, hold on, and say “no” to tax hikes on the ballot, they can defeat Jerry’s tax scheme. (The Democrat majority needs only 2 Republicans in each house to place these massive “tax extensions” on the ballot.)

Back up our efforts. Please call, fax, or email now to say “No more taxes!”
(If you can, please give a helpful donation to fuel our pro-family campaign)

“Governments don’t reduce deficits by raising taxes on the people. Governments reduce deficits by controlling spending and stimulating new wealth, wealth from investments of brave people with hope for the future, trust in their fellow man, and faith in God.”
Ronald Reagan in his May 14, 1983 weekly radio address

ALERT: California’s big tax-hike showdown looms

Monday, March 7, 2011, 4:26 pm |

The lights are on and the bugs are scattering.

Now we know which Republicans have been meeting with Democrat Governor Jerry Brown on a deal to place Brown’s massive “tax extension” on the June ballot. California’s old-new tax-hiker Governor is looking for just 2 Republicans in the Senate and 2 Republicans in the Assembly to join him and all the tax-and-spend Democrats to accomplish this dirty deed. Today, 5 Republican senators who had met with Brown said they were at a temporary impasse, and Brown said “a few more days” was needed to negotiate a deal.

I have to tell you, in my 17 years of pro-family work in Sacramento, I have consistently seen a handful of Republican sell out year after year and push more oppression on families and hard-working individuals. Remember two years ago? That’s when 6 Republicans joined the Democrats to create a 2/3rds supermajority to impose new taxes on your purchases, your income, and your car, and to significantly reduce the state’s child tax credit for parents. And this, when there are TENS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN ANNUAL WASTE that could and should be eliminated.

TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION

With a vote expected as soon as this Wednesday or Thursday, please drop everything and email and call these 7 at-risk Republican state legislators. Tell them you demand, “No more taxes and fees. Vote NO on placing Jerry Brown’s tax scheme on the ballot!”

If a staffer gives you trouble because you’re not “in our district,” just say “Please give my message to the member (or senator). He is deciding whether to take more money from me and my family!” Also, please forward this alert to your friends via email, Facebook and Twitter to ask them to do their parts. We need a mini-flood of opposition calls and emails in Sacramento, right away.

1. Email a pre-written “no more taxes, fees or borrowing” message to your own state legislators.
